Aging and care in Southeast Asia
Southeast Asian countries are, to varying degrees, experiencing aging of their population. Thailand is second only to Singapore in the ratio of elderly population. How is elderly care being practiced, and how are the elderly themselves experiencing this. I examine elderly care against the background of Thai social dynamics, especially at the family and community levels. Not only will this throw light on both understanding care in the cross-cultural context, but also in understanding the social dynamics of the region. How the Thai experiences might differ from those earlier aging societies among the industrialized countries will be an important issue in the face of global aging.

Religious Dynamics in Mainland Southeast Asia: Buddhist Saints in the Myanmar-Thai Border Region
In the Thai-Myanmar borderland, there are saintly monks around whom a large community of devotees gather, from among the ethnic minority groups who have long inhabited the area, or among the transborder migrants. In these two countries, where Buddhism is at the core of its social order and culture, what do these religious movements at the periphery of institutional Buddhism imply in the religious dynamics of each country? what does that tell us regarding our hitherto institution-centered perspectives on Buddhism.

Modern Christian mission and Baptist evangelism among minority ethnic groups in colonial Burma
In the early Baptist mission in nineteenth century Burma, ethnic minority converts had a significant role in the evangelizing mission among their own people and others. I follow this process through looking at historical material, including those in Karen language. I argue that the process and the activities of the Karen converts had impact in shaping the modern mission endeavor itself. By examining the process by which the organization, budget, as well as regulations regarding baptism and ordination etc. were formulated through the interaction between the mission and the converts, I hope to contribute to scholarship on Christianity and missions, as well as on the encounter between western modernity and the region.
