In my research, I analyze the Southeast Asian region from the viewpoint of institutions and organizations. I consider concrete problems by incorporating natural resources, technology, local knowledge, history, and policies around land, labor, and capital into the discourse and data that informs my research. We are continuing our work in clarifying the characteristics of the area, and at the same time, enable comparison between regions. Specific problems include the processes of decentralization and democratization in Indonesia after the resignation of President Suharto, as well as changes in labor organizations and labor relations after the recovery of the right to organize. Of significance is that, a result of these historical events, one can argue that people have found it less challenging to organize themselves and participate in natural resource management. I’ve done work to reconsider these problems from a historical perspective. The research has always looked towards a solution through practice-oriented action research in collaboration with local people, providing a deeper understanding of the problems at hand. This year I have written manuscripts that will eventually constitute a cohesive text on “Indonesian Industrial Relations and the Industrial Disputes Settlement System.” In addition, I have organized a research project titled “Toward the Regeneration of Tropical Peatland Societies: Building an International Research Network on Paludiculture and Sustainable Management” at the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature. In this project, I carried out the program strengthening the land rights of people living within the boundaries of state land, in collaboration with local people, the Government, and researchers within the scheme of the peatland restoration program. I am carrying out research on palm oil production upon the peatland from the viewpoint that more can be done to maintain the balance of Indonesia’s natural resource reliant form of economic production and the environment. Historically the Indonesian economy has relied heavily on the production and export of primary products, as seen in today’s oil palm production and export. On the other hand, the production and consumption of resources for the sake of the domestic population was also the pillar of Indonesia’s social economy. The coexistence of the primary commodity economy and the popular economy has brought about the improvement of living standards and the process of industrialization. This is the pathway for Indonesian economic development, which differs from the conventional export-oriented form of industrialization or the involution model.
